Byzantine Choir of the Metropolis of Chicago-N. Georgafentis

Nikolaos Giannoukakis

Παλαιό Μέλος
Although there are few classically-trained psaltae in the USA, a beacon of light shines in the windy city of Chicago.

For 30+ years, Archon Nikolaos Georgafentis has graced not only analogia in Illinois, but has coordinated what was a difficult endeavour in bringining together many psaltae in Chicago under the aegis of the Syllogos Ieropsaltwn (Chanter's Association) of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago.

He has trained many young people in Byzantine Chant according to the tradition of Constantinople. He himself was trained by the great Nikolaos Hatzistamatis, Protopsaltis of Chios in Greece.

The Choir of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago represents chant tradition faithful to history, and is among the few Choirs in America representative of Constantinopolitan tradition.

Mr. Georgafentis was made Archon Hartoularios last year by His All Holiness Bartholomew for his devoted service to the church in Chicago.
